GroBoto v3 Mac beta - New Features

New Mac Beta Released!  (11.02.10)

Fourth Mac Build with Custom Boolean Tools. More Refinements in SeamNet Mesh generation.

Please try the Custom Boolean Tools - They are new and we need your help (not to mention, they’re a kick).

It’s absolutely vital that you read the Custom Boolean Docs and see the Boolean Intro Video (Video link in Boolean Docs).

This beta release focuses on two new features:

  1. Custom Booleans

  2. SeamNet Mesh Output

Flex Tools & Flex Tools
Beta release 2.9.4

See the Videos

Flex Tools are enhanced versions of GroBoto’s Move Rotate and Reshape Tools. They operate on groups of objects using a range of influence. For example the Flex Move Tool will move the object you click on, but also move any nearby objects, with the tool’s ‘pull’ fading with distance.

FlexForms are collections of GroBoto Primitives set up to respond to our new Flex Tools. Actually, any collection of primitives will work with our Flex Tools. However, assembling primitives in particular configurations creates a more responsive, controllable and organized form.

Set up is easy, and falls into two basic categories:

Implied Linking - Setting up models with GroBoto Primitives that have matching end/center points.

FlexForm Tagging - Telling GroBoto how you want individual primitives to react to Flex Tools. For example you can tag the central objects of a symmetrical model so that they always remain centered in the mirror direction.

Things to keep in mind:

Flex Tools only work in the Workspace

Flex Tools are Optional modes of the standard Move, Rotate, and Reshape tools found in the Edit Panel below the GroBoto Workspace. These are options are only in effect when the tool is applied in the Workspace (that is, when you click & drag on objects in the workspace with one of those tools selected in the Edit Panel). The Move, Rotate, and Reshape widgets (in the Edit Panel) operate like they did in version 2, ignoring any Flex Tool settings.

SeamNet Mesh Output
Beta release 2.9.4

SeamNet Meshes are our new Unified Mesh... all of the visible primitives in your scene are melded into a single ‘shell’ mesh. We call them ‘SeamNet’ meshes because of their special structure. GroBoto’s geometry is procedural, so we know the exact location of all surfaces and seams (seams are formed by edges of objects like cylinders, and by the intersections of primitives with one another).

This results in accurate, efficient , highly articulate meshes that preserve all of the subtlety & complexity of the GRoBoto model.

These meshes are ideal for sculpting in apps like ZBrush, MudBox, and Modo. They are also better for importing into Vue, Bryce, 3DS Max, Maya, etc. They are more efficient that our old ‘per-object’ mesh export, and offer more options for editing and texturing in other apps.

Things to keep in mind:

SeamNet Previews are Modal

SeamNet Meshes can be viewed in the Workspace, but are not editable. You can change the Camera and lights, but any other GroBoto editing will automatically exit the SeamMesh preview.

Quick Overview of the Main Features in this Release

New & Updated Videos added with version 2.9.4

The new videos use Character Design as a way to explore new tools and features -- but don’t let that fool you. The tools and techniques are not specific to character design. They can be use with any GroBoto Model... Architectural, Mechanical, Algorithmic (Bots), etc.

We will explore all such things as we continue to add videos.
